Shorts: Community Arts Projects

Select a community based arts project and discuss one instrumental and one intrinsic outcome of this project. Read over the arts engagement and arts industry profile for the electorate the project is based within, and suggest ways in which this evidence could influence the design of a new community art project.

I've been following Welcome Studio through social media since it launched back in 2016. The organisation is an artist initiative partnering with refugees with the aim of supporting and welcoming them to the community. One project I have loved is their Welcome Walls with Muralisto, where street artists have collaborated with refugee artists to paint murals throughout Western Sydney. They also participated in an Australia Day community event at Parramatta Park, welcoming the public to collaborate on pop up murals and participate in the conversation of inclusivity in the community.

One instrumental outcome of these projects is attitudinal change in the community as the works create public awareness of the refugees and immigrants in their community and encourage inclusivity. One intrinsic outcomes of the project is the creation of captivating artwork for the community and individuals to enjoy.

The Australian Council for the Arts shows that 98% of the community engage with the arts in the Parramatta electorate. The lowest areas of involvement include creatively participating (45%), engaging with arts of their cultural background (34%), and involvement with community arts and cultural development (17%). Welcome Walls addresses all three of these categories, encouraging public participation, cultural arts and cultural development. Future arts projects should continue to support the multicultural community with more options for community members to engage with arts of their cultural background, in turn promoting diversity of cultural expression and its practical benefits.
